How to Change

Change is hard, our brains are wired to do the same thing over and over again. Old habits stick and new habits are hard to form.


All true but not the full picture.


Change isn’t always hard, change can be fun, change is a great way to experiment with life.

I think the heavy burden of change is partly down to language. We use change as synonymous with big, transformational changes and that type of fundamental change can be hard and takes a lot of contemplation and planning as well as careful execution.


But change is also a range of other activities.


Small tweaks, redirections, experiments, trying things out are all change and can have significant positive impact on how we live and how we perceive our life experience.


Things that are Change


  • Learning new skills, developing existing skills, teaching someone else a skill

  • Acquiring new knowledge or experience

  • Expanding your personal or professional network and making new friends and contacts

  • Finding you like quite something, somewhere or someone that you didn’t like before

  • Stopping doing something that no longer interests you

  • Starting doing something that does interest you

  • Outgrowing old opinions or beliefs

  • Finding out something new or unexpected


Things you can Change

  • Likes, dislikes, preferences

  • Ideas, opinions, attitudes

  • Skills, knowledge, capabilities

  • Jobs, hobbies, interests

  • Routines, habits, priorities

  • Schedules, timetables, calendars

  • Hopes, dreams, ambitions


Things you can’t Change

  • Facts

  • Other people
